BASF has developed a polyamide 6 particle foam that it says has high temperature and chemical resistance when in contact with fuels, oils and lubricants.

According to the company, the foam has a closed cell structure that improves compressive strength making it suitable for use in crash relevant components that are exposed to high mechanical demands. Molded part densities can be adjusted between of 150 to 600 g/L, and lightweight applications are possible as well.

BASF says that the material can be processed on expanded polypropylene (EPP) molding machines as well as using water steam free technologies. The compounds are available unreinforced, or reinforced with glass fibers, minerals or long-glass fibers for certain applications.
