AIMPLAS has developed a new biodegradable, compostable plastic material from olive stones that could be used to make new packaging materials.
Currently, olive stones, a waste material in the production of olive oil, are incinerated for power generation.
Oliplast, which comprises a filler or reinforcement from olive oil and a thermoplastic material, can reportedly be processed by extrusion and injection moulding to manufacture new products such as trays and plates to hold bottles.
