Road bridge sustainability

The University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) in the UK has implemented a project to improve the sustainability of road bridge construction.

It is working with the High Value Manufacturing (HVM) Catapult, a group of manufacturing research centers, to create a hub for builders and the supply chain to collaborate with technology providers to decarbonize bridges in future.

According to the AMRC, many bridges are showing signs of ageing and coming to the end of their lifecycle. “Some experts believe that existing UK bridges are operating at only a fraction of their actual capacity, which is a result of probability-based design rules and delivery methods,” it said in a press release. “A lack of alternative materials to reinforced concrete is also a limiting factor to reducing our carbon footprint in the repair and development of new bridges.”
