Celanese to acquire Dupont materials

Chemicals specialist firm Celanese Corporation has agreed to agreement to acquire a majority of DuPont’s Mobility & Materials (M&M) business for US$11 bn.

The business makes engineering thermoplastics and elastomers for automotive, electrical and electronics, consumer goods, and industrial applications. It includes materials such as nylons, specialty nylons, polyesters, and elastomers. M&M comprises 29 facilities, including compounding and polymerization, 850 patents, and around 5000 employees.

“The M&M business is a uniquely complementary specialty materials asset to EM [Celenese’s Engineered Materials business], spanning product, geography, and end-market,” said Tom Kelly, senior VP at Celenese. “This acquisition greatly enhances the EM product portfolio by adding new polymers, industry-renowned brands, leading product technology, and backward integration in critical polymers.”
