AkzoNobel introduces cobalt-free thermoset accelerators

AkzoNobel reports the low-cobalt and cobalt-free accelerators offer more sustainable alternatives to traditional cobalt octoate and cobalt acetate.

The Nouryact accelerators are based on copper, manganese and iron and can be used in most ambient cure systems. They allow for low-cobalt and cobalt-free curing of unsaturated polyester resins, including orthophthalic, isophthalic, vinyl ester and DCPD resins, while maintaining existing cycle times and mechanical properties.

AkzoNobel says it is working on other cobalt-free alternatives, some of which will be ready for launch in early 2011. The company's ambition is to further develop its portfolio to service all thermoset applications.

AkzoNobel also produces the Butanox® and Perkadox® phthalate-free curing agents.

AkzoNobel, headquartered in the Netherlands, is a leading producer of curing systems for unsaturated polyester resins. Its product portfolio includes organic peroxides, accelerators, promoters and inhibitors.
