Sales in the Brazilian composites industry totaled US$ 335 million in the first half of this year, a 30% drop compared to the same period of 2015, according to results disseminated by the Latin American Composite Materials Association (ALMACO) from consulting firm Maxiquim.
For processed material, the decline corresponded to 27.8%, totaling 66,5000 tons. When compared to the second half of last year, the shrinkages were, respectively, 8% and 5.5%.
‘Composites are widely consumed by the transportation sector, especially automakers of buses and truck, which have been experiencing a very complicated situation,’ said Gilmar Lima, president of ALMACO. ‘There was also a decline in demand in the wind energy market, the only sector that had been immune to the crisis so far. In parallel, the companies in our supply chain were not sufficiently capitalized to face such a long recession, deteriorated by the credit restriction and cost, which prevents the development of new products.’ For 2016, Maxiquim estimates a turnover of US$ 720 million, or 13.7% lower than in the previous result - in terms of volume, it should total 136,000 tons, 8.8% lower than in 2015. ‘Still, I have no doubt that 2017 will be better, despite the lower results reported this year,’ said Lima, suggesting that the recovery will begin with the infrastructure, construction and wind energy markets. ‘The sports segment, inspired by the Olympics, should also generate important opportunities for composite materials.’
According to the president of ALMACO, companies should do their best to ensure that their values and advantages remain unchanged despite the difficult times experienced now. ‘Those who have not lost know-how with the departure of talents will face exceptional years from now on.’
