SABIC builds on material success

Innovative and more sustainable heavy-duty panels replacing wooden and metal panels in applications in the building and construction industry.

The future of the global building and construction industry looks healthy with opportunities in residential, non-residential and in infrastructure, according to last year’s Growth Opportunities in the Global Construction Industry report from Lucintel. It reported that the global construction industry is expected to reach an estimated $10.5 trillion by 2023, and it is forecast to grow towards that level at a CAGR of 4.2% from 2018 to 2023. The major drivers for the growth of this market are increasing housing starts and rising infrastructure due to burgeoning population growth and urbanization.

When it comes to emerging trends that have a direct impact on the construction industry, the report cited the demand for green construction to reduce carbon footprint, bridge lock-up device systems to enhance the life of structures, building information systems for efficient building management, and the use of fiber-reinforced polymer composites for the rehabilitation of aging structures.

The construction industry is one of the largest industries in the world that still has enormous potential to develop. However, today, many of the materials used are very traditional and have been around for more than a century, especially in areas such as scaffolding and framing. These traditional materials are often bulky and not very sustainable. SABIC has developed STADECK™ panels specifically to meet the new requirements of the construction and building industry.

From a philosophy to deeply understand our customers’ needs, SABIC works to meet industry’s most pressing requirements. In this instance, we collaborated with several influential companies specialized in scaffolding and frame working to shape the direction of the project. From these collaboration conversations, we learned about several aspects of traditional materials used in scaffolding panels that the market had concerns about, including lifespan, ergonomics, and sustainability. Initially targeting alternatives to the basic wooden panels used for scaffolding and framing, we soon discovered novel functionalities could be incorporated to add value for specialist application needs across various segments, making the project highly viable commercially.
