SGL Carbon says that it plans to focus on serial production of composites for the automotive, aerospace and industrial sectors at this year’s JEC World, taking place from 3-5 March 2020 in Paris, France.
SGL will present a demo exhibit for the door frame of a passenger aircraft based on 50k carbon fiber, which it says is suitable for serial production.
The company also plans to exhibit a prototype battery enclosure based on carbon fiber for electric vehicles. According to SGL, hybrid composites with a mixture of glass and carbon fibers are also possible. It will also showcase for the first time a new leaf spring generation made of glass fiber composite that is used as a longitudinal leaf spring for the rear axle of the Ford Transit. When compared to conventional leaf springs, the composite leaf spring weighs up to 50% less while offering increased security standards, the company said.
Also on display at JEC World will be a carbon fiber-based concept for an rotor arm for urban air mobility applications (air taxis) and a crossbeam made of carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) used in automated Schuler press lines. According to SGL, the composite offers weight savings of up to 40% compared with conventional materials and has improved rigidity and strength, as well as a low thermal expansion and improved damping performance.
