Lightweight composite climbing helmet

Aluula Composites has developed a lightweight composite material for a climbing helmet.

The company says that the material has a 44% higher strength to weight ratio compared to the aramid previously used, with the weight of the penetration shield reduced by 40%.

The new version of the Vapor helmet, manufactured by mountain sports brand Black Diamond,  weighs 155g in total, less than the previous model’s weight of 186g.

Aluula Composites uses a patented fusion technology to bond films to an ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) core to make the composite.
