ThermHex Waben, a producer of honeycomb cores for sandwich panels and Panel Systems, a British supplier of insulated panels, have installed a lightweight polypropylene honeycomb core in the elevated roofs of 2,000 Ford, Volkswagen and other camper vans.
According to the companies, demand for the roof panels has increased because the honeycomb is up to 80% lighter than plywood and does not disintegrate in the rain.
ThermHex’s honeycomb cores form part of a layer in the underside of the roof, providing a foundation for the other layers including acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) polymer. While the polymer can become soft in hot weather, the honeycomb maintains stability and firmness, the company says.
