Hexion introduces two waterborne epoxy resins

Hexion Inc has launched two new waterborne epoxy resins. The low volatile organic compound (VOC) resins can be used in the manufacture of water-based coatings.

‘Our new resins, EPI-REZ Resin 6521-WH-56 and EPI-REZ Resin 6531-WH-57, enable formulators to create environmentally-compliant coatings with excellent adhesion to both metals and non-metals,’ claimed Ann Frederix, senior vice president, Epoxy Specialties. ‘Their flexibility and strong corrosion resistance make them well-suited for demanding applications like transportation and heavy duty protective coatings.’

Used alone or as a blend, when cured with the appropriate curing agent, the resins have improved adhesion to a range of substrates, including blank steel, corrosion and water resistance, flexibility and impact resistance, improved chemical resistance and a longer pot life of up to 6-8 hours, the company says.

While EPI-REZ Resin 6531-WH-57 provides flexibility and impact resistance, making it suitable for transportation applications, EPI-REZ Resin 6521-WH-56 reportedly provides greater hardness and faster drying with performance similar to Hexion’s NewGen Epoxy resin EPI-REZ 6520-WH-53. Both new resins are currently produced in Europe.
