“Green” rudder for aircraft

EconCore is developing a “green” composite rudder for an Airbus aircraft made with thermoplastic honeycomb sandwich composites.

According to the company, it is working with technology institute Fraunhofer and the Technical University of Denmark as part of an EU project to develop more lightweight aircraft components.

Plans are to make the rudder with “potentially recyclable” thermoplastic honeycomb sandwich structures instead of thermoset materials such as phenolic resin honeycombs and epoxy laminates.
