Lanxess has developed a glass fiber reinforced plastic (GRP) battery module housing for a Korean range of electric vehicles (EVs).
The company worked with auto parts specialist INFAC to make the battery housing from its Durethan BKV30FN04 material. According to Lanxess, the fiber-reinforced polyamide 6 (PA6) is halogen-free and flame-retardant, and is processable enough to enable the integration of the complex functions required for housing components. It also reportedly offers boasts high-voltage insulation and maintains strength and stiffness when in contact with electrolyte or cooling media.
Lanxess’ engineering plastics are also suitable for parts such as battery covers, high-voltage connectors, cable brackets and battery cell cooling system pipes as well as parts for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles such as hydrogen storage tanks.
