Composite Welsh dragon to celebrate World Cup

Compcut, a UK-based company that specializes in composite tooling, has been commissioned to cut a complex Welsh dragon shape from a laminated carbon fiber composite.

The project was set up by Welsh company R-Tech Materials to celebrate the country playing in the football World Cup for the first time since 1958.

Due to the complexity of the dragon shape, Compcut’s precision composite router (PCR) 300 was chosen. The process began with the machining of the vac bed to which the colored carbon fiber composite material was fixed using vacuum pressure. A rough cut of the shape was then made using a 2.5 mm diamond tool, before an air pressurised blow down cleaned the panel of any excess debris. The PCR 300 then added small tool detailing as small as 0.5 mm.

“This was also a positive joint venture, demonstrating collaborative efforts with our friends at R-Tech Materials, as well as showcasing the vivid, unique colouring technology from contributor Hypetex,” said Jon Small, Compcut sales manager.
