European prepreg specialist SHD Group says that its PS200 bio-derived prepreg system has been chosen by a Slovenian aero manufacturer to help build propulsion system battery containers.

The boxes will be manufactured along with serial production of front electric sustainer (FES) electric propulsion systems. FES systems self-launch and self-sustainer systems for electric powered sailplanes, SHD said.

According to the company, using the prepreg helps make the propulsion system more lightweight and compact, while providing protection against the high temperature, pressure and fire in the event of a battery thermal runaway reaction. The FES system has achieved the necessary EASA Type Certification, with over 240 sailplanes, currently equipped with the novel propulsion system.

PS200 resin is derived from a by-product of sugar cane processing and is a sustainable and low carbon raw material source, according to SHD.
