Victrex has announced a webinar focusing on the suitability of thermoplastic composite pipes in corrosive subsea environments.

The webinar, entitled ‘Qualification of m-pipe and Hybrid Flexible Pipe for deployment in Brazil’s pre-salt region: composite materials selection’, will take place Tuesday, 5 November 2019 at 8:00 am EST.

According to Dr Geoff Small, head of technology at Victrex, subsea operations by the energy sector in challenging locations such as Brazil's pre-salt region can have issues in material selection and engineering design. While steel-based pipe systems carry the risk of additional corrosion, hybrid flexible pipes (HFP) could overcome this by combining the performance of a thermoplastic composite pipe (TCP) with conventional flexible technology.

‘In flexibles, the loading on the polymeric components is low as it acts as an intermediate leak-proof sheath, while in HFPs the role of the polymer is also to act as a protective liner/conduit, and most importantly as a matrix for the composite,’ he said. ‘To overcome technical challenges and assess solutions for deployment in Brazil’s pre-salt region, the composite materials selection needs thorough assessment.’
