Test confirms shear standard

Textechno says that its Fimatest test system can confirm interfacial shear strength of a composite according to a new EU standard.

The standard, DIN SPEC 19289, was published in August 2022 and specifies how to characterize the bonding between fibre and matrix by means of a single-fibre pull-out test.

According to D. Michael Effing, senior advisor at Textechno, the new standard is applicable to both thermoset and thermoplastic composites.

“Up to now, a characterization of the interfacial shear strength according to standards was only possible with elaborate and hence expensive micromechanical testing techniques such as ILSS testing,” said Dr Ulrich Mörschel, CEO of Textechno. “Here, the results depend on the exact mechanical structure of the test specimen. In contrast, the single-fiber pull-out test gives a direct measure of the fiber-matrix adhesion strength on its own.”
