ISO standard for textile drapability

Textechno, which makes precision testing equipment, says that a test method implemented in its DRAPETEST automatic drapability tester has now been standardized as ISO 21765.

This new standard “Textiles – Determination of fabric deformability by forced mechani-cal distension” focuses on the formation of defects during the draping and forming pro-cess of standard and non-crimp fabrics.

According to Textechno, ISO 21765:2020 allows the global comparable measurement of all relevant pa-rameters regarding the deformability and drapability of all kinds of fabrics, including woven fabrics and NCFs as well as knitted fabrics and nonwovens. This can be very useful in carbon fiber recycling, since one of the most efficient applications of recycled carbon fiber in in nonwovens, the company added.

‘The standard finally fills a gap in the testing methods for fabrics both in the fields of textiles and com-posites,’ said Ulrich Mörschel, MD of Textechno.

‘A lot of research is dedicated to new production technologies of composites, non-crimp fabrics and classical fabrics for thermosets which have a significant market share in the production of all composite materials,’ said composite consultant Dr Michael Effing, which has been advising Textechno. ‘The appli-cation of the new standard for nonwovens from recycled carbon fibres comes perfectly on time for this market sector which will gain more and more importance within the next years.’
