SGL starts production of thermoplastic-compatible carbon fibre

The automotive industry is showing interest in SIGRAFIL C 50k carbon fibre.

“Our new heavy tow carbon fibre SIGRAFIL® C 50k has already been exhibited with great success at this year’s JEC Composites Show in Paris and, after the show, we received our first orders,” reports Peter Weber, Vice President Sales & Marketing, SGL Group.

SGL has developed a sizing which enables the carbon fibres to be firmly bonded to the thermoplastic matrix so that their high stiffness and strength be fully transmitted to the finished components. Other sizing systems are in development, e.g. for high-temperature applications.

Carbon fibre reinforced thermoplastic composites combine the properties of carbon fibre with the processing advantages of thermoplastics. They can be shaped, recycled, and produced in short cycles.
