Plastic waste recycling highest in record

Sustainability technology company Nozama, reports that, according to DEFRA figures, the rate of recovery and recycling of plastic waste in the UK is at 47%, the highest figure on record.

However, according to the company, because the amount of plastic packaging has increased, 1.3 million tonnes were still not recycled or recovered in 2020, similar to previous years and higher than 2016 and 2017.

In 2020, 1 306 million tonnes of plastic packaging were neither recycled or recovered, while in 2016 and 2017 1.245 million and 1.216 million tonnes of plastic packaging failed to be recovered or recycled, respectively.

“It is evident from these figures that while improvements are being made in the recovery and recycling of plastic packaging, we are not keeping up  with the use of single use packaging,” said André  Vanyi Robin, CEO of Nozama.
