US phenolic prepreg supplier Lewcott says the Lewcott LC family of phenolic prepregs are self extinguishing and supply the outstanding flame, smoke and toxicity (FST) properties needed for use in aircraft, marine, and other interior applications.

Lewcott phenolic prepregs have been qualified against FAR (Federal Aviation Regulation) 25.853, ASTM E662-96, and various MIL (US military standard) and customer specific specifications.

The Lewcott LC family of phenolic prepregs can be tailored for the following:

  • general purpose or self adhesive;
  • bag grade or press grade; and
  • snap cure or standard cure.

Lewcott develops, manufactures and supplies all of its own phenolic resins. The company has an installed capacity base of approximately 30 000 000 lbs/year of phenolic resin and around 15 000 000 lbs/year of phenolic prepreg. Lewcott prepregs can be reinforced with glass, carbon, or aramid reinforcements and are supplied at widths up to 60+ inches. As well as phenolic products, Lewcott also supplies fire resistant epoxy formulations for use in interior applications. These formulations are self adhesive to aramid and aluminium honeycombs, are self extinguishing, and pass the 60 second vertical ignition test as listed in FAR 25.853.

“We are very proud of our line of phenolic and epoxy based prepregs for interior applications," says Carl Varnerin, Chief Technical Officer at Lewcott. "We have worked very hard over the last couple years to develop a family of products that should supply cost effective solutions for wide range of interior needs, whether they be on aircraft, shipboard, or other markets. Several of the prepregs have already been qualified at a number of interior part suppliers and manufacturers, and others are in process.”
