Hartzell develops composite propeller for kit aircraft

The new propeller is 4 lbs lighter than Hartzell’s previous model due to the certification of a lighter-weight hub.

Hartzell’s three-bladed composite propeller is reported to noticeably improve the smoothness of flight on the RV-10 when compared to the two-bladed aluminium propeller. The ASC-II’s proprietary blade design features a carbon fibre monocoque construction with co-moulded leading edges of electroformed nickel for erosion resistance.

“Hartzell’s two-bladed blended airfoil prop for the RV-10 is a great performer and their new lightweight three-blade composite propeller is noticeably smoother without giving up much performance," says Gus Funnell, Van’s Aircraft, technical support.

“This new propeller for Van’s Aircraft RV-10 knocks 4 lbs off our previous model," notes Hartzell’s senior VP, marketing and customer service, Mike Disbrow. "A weight saving like this, at the front of the aircraft, can make a significant difference to the plane’s centre of gravity and loading.”

The propeller assembly with the new lightweight hub weighs approximately 55 lbs.

The composite propeller is available to order directly through Van’s Aircraft. 

Hartzell, located in Piqua, Ohio, USA, designs and makes propellers. Among blade options, it uses advanced structural composites or aluminium alloy, depending on weight and life cycle costs.
