Composite replacement for EV material

Trelleborg reports that it will take part in a research and development project focused on finding a composite replacement for aluminum in electric vehicle (EV) batteries.

Other partners in the project include composite R&D company Far UK Ltd, Great British Sportscars Limited and engineering consultancy Engenuity Ltd.

Plans are for the replacement material to be integrated into an EV battery to reduce the overall weight of the battery case, supporting the decarbonization of vehicles on the road and reducing emissions through lightweighting. The end goal is to build a working proof-of-concept within a vehicle.

‘Electric vehicle production is a critical emerging market for Trelleborg, and we are keen to support the progression to electrification,’ said Neil O’Keeffe, technical director.

The project is for a six-month period, with findings and results published during 2022.
