Carbon fiber tapes suitable for aerospace

Jiangsu Hansu New Material Co and Sabic have developed a new range of unidirectional (UD) composite tapes made with continuous carbon fiber and the latter’s ULTEM 1000F3SP polyetherimide (PEI) powder.

According to the companies, the UD tapes are suitable for in aerospace applications such as seat frames and luggage compartments as a possible replacement for metal, and could reduce weight and improve fuel efficiency and sustainability.

The powder has flame retardance, long-term heat stability, improved strength and stiffness and dimensional stability, Sabic said. It can be dispersed in water to create a homogeneous slurry that is uniformly distributed among the carbon fibers.

‘Our collaboration with Sabic has enabled us to expand our portfolio from materials for computer electronics into the higher-performance composites space where we are able to meet the most stringent demands of aerospace applications,’ said Xu Shenggang, chief technology officer, Jiangsu Hansu.
