AITEX and AIMPLAS to develop bio-composites using soybean oil resin and natural fibres

The BIOAVANT project aims to develop bio-composites from bio-resins and natural fibres.
The BIOAVANT project aims to develop bio-composites from bio-resins and natural fibres.

Using soybean oil resin the two Spanish project partners will try to reduce the amount of petroleum-based polymer in the composite to 60%. Flax, hemp and jute fibres will be used as alternatives to glass fibres.

One of the most important aspects for the production of natural fibres when compared to glass fibre is the lower energy required for their manufacturing, with the subsequent advantages for the environment.

The project will also use the bio-composite to manufacture of the blades for a micro-wind energy demonstrator.

The new composite is also said to be suitable for applications in the shipbuilding, construction, furniture, transport, and sports and leisure sectors.

This three-year BIOAVANT project, coordinated by AIMPLAS, will end in 2014. It is being funded by the Valencian Institut of Business Competitiveness (IVACE) and the European Union.
