Hexcel and French testing company Institut de Soudure Group have received a JEC award for a thermoplastic composite technology entitled Innovative Solutions for Welding (ISW).

Hexcel and its strategic alliance partner Arkema provided the carbon fiber reinforced polyetherketoneketone (PEKK) materials for the welding targeted by the ISW process. ISW can also be applied to any other thermoplastic matrix and fibers such as glass or aramid, the companies say, and is suitable for aerostructures.

According to Hexcel, the ISW process could produce weld joint performances of approximately 85% better when compared to other processes, without any remaining heat transfer material or strip at the weld line after the operation.
