Composite bonding for aerospace

Solvay has developed FusePly, a composite bonding technology for aerospace applications.

According to the company it can help build bonded composite parts using conventional manufacturing processes, through the creation of covalently bonded structures, potentially removing the need for abundant rivets and fasteners.

FusePly reportedly offers clear step-change bonding performance along with improved reliability. When compared to mechanical fasteners, the adhesive can offer higher performance since drilling holes into fiber-reinforced structures can introduce structural damage and create stress concentrations that could reduce the load capacity of the part. The reduction and replacement of fasteners with FusePly bonding could also reduce the overall weight of the aircraft. Adhesives offer much greater design flexibility during manufacture and assembly at lower cost, says Solvay.
