Carbon fiber hybrid wheel

Wheel manufacturer Dymag and composites specialists Hankuk Carbon are working with Hyundai to develop carbon hybrid wheels for its N range of vehicles.

According to the companies, the wheels feature a carbon fiber composite outer rim and a metallic centrepiece and offer weight savings of between 40% and 50% when compared to a cast aluminium wheel. Using carbon fiber can also reduce unsprung mass and rolling inertia and improve stiffness and strength, according to Dymag. Gyroscopic force is also reduced, improving steering feel and handling, the company said.

A prototype wheel was recently on show at the Goodwood Festival of Speed show in the UK.
