Chemicals specialist Lanxess says that it plans to increase its use of artificial intelligence (AI) in product development and has launched a project aimed at expanding its range of prepolymers.

According to the company, the goal is to offer end users bespoke polyurethane systems with shorter lead times, including for new applications with different requirements.

Lanxess has initially enlarged its database of prepolymer-based formulations by using an AI platform to link existing empirical measurement data with the knowledge of process experts and a chemistry-aware algorithm to calculate additional measurement values. The company says that only a few real-life measurements would be required to verify the figures determined with AI.

It next plans to check how formulations can be predicted with the aid of AI to meet customer-specific requirements for product characteristics.
