Yacht builder diversifies into renewable energy

Christensen Shipyards Ltd, a manufacturer of composite motor yachts, launched Renewable Energy Composite Solutions (RECS) in July this year following a decline in the boat building sector. RECS is based at Christensen's facility in Vancouver, Washington, USA.

RECS will focus on composite solutions for wind turbines and marine energy devices. The RECS project will provide 99 temporary and 101 permanent jobs.

RECS was awarded the $1 million grant by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act for energy efficiency, renewable energy and clean technology programmes throughout the state. The funding addresses a specific goal to reduce energy consumption by at least 25% of the state’s 1990 per capita energy use by 2012.

RECS was one of 19 private and public projects that were selected based on their ability to:

  • implement a project that will produce tangible result;
  • create or retain jobs in Washington;
  • leverage other funds;
  • increase energy efficiency and production to in turn reduce energy costs and consumption for consumers, business and government.
