SGL, headquartered in Germany, manufactures carbon-based products, including carbon fibres.
“SGL Group perceives the financial participation of Volkswagen as an appreciation of our long term start-up and development activities in new materials and technologies particularly in automotive lightweight construction," reports Robert Koehler, CEO of SGL Group. "These include, among others, carbon fibre based structural parts, the well known carbon ceramic brake discs as well as components for lithium ion batteries, which will play an important role in electric mobility.“
He notes that SGL’s long term intention is to strengthen its independence by establishing a small group of anchor investors.
- SGL has a joint venture with BMW which is building a carbon fibre manufacturing plant in the USA. The carbon fibre will be used in the new BMW i3 electric car (previously known as the Megacity Vehicle).
