The bike was created by German company UBC’s designer Christian Zanzotti. Its frame is made using Umeco’s epoxy prepregs incorporating high tensile strength carbon fibres generally used for structural assemblies on the monocoques of Formula One cars.
“Our work involved more than just designing a bike frame – we constructed a complete bike," says Zanzotti. "The end result embodies the core values of UBC. After all, UBC is an out-and-out carbon specialist and this bicycle demonstrates our expertise in this material. Particular highlights include the design of the top tube, the finely detailed cross sections, the joint transitions from seat tube to top tube and the transitions at the steering tube.”
“The Coren’s design revolves around the carbon frame comprising top frame tube, base frame tube and seat tube, which we will equip with the best components from BOR, ENVE, Schmolke, Trickstuff and Tune,” explains Sebastian Wegerle, Product and Marketing Manager, UBC.
“Everything is done under one roof: design, development, construction, production of the aluminium moulds, cutting the individual carbon fibre layers, laminating the frame elements, baking, joining, quality assurance and assembly. Every frame requires about 40 hours of manual labour.”
Other exhibits on the Umeco stand will include:
- a staggered sandwich panel demonstrating how its products work the production of large out-of-autoclave structures;
- two prosthetic limbs, one for everyday use and the other for use by competitive athletes which have been manufactured using Umeco prepregs; and
- a selection of automotive components illustrating the applications of Umeco's structural and cosmetic prepregs.
COMPOSITES EUROPE 2012 takes place on 9-11 October in Düsseldorf, Germany. The show is organised by Reed Exhibitions with the support of the European Composites Industry Association (EuCIA), the American Composites Manufacturers Association (ACMA), Reinforced Plastics magazine, the German engineering association VDMA (Verband Deutscher Maschinen- und Anlagenbau) and German association for reinforced plastics AVK.
