Sustainable styrene

Lanxess and French energy group TotalEnergies have formed a styrene supply agreement which they say improves the sustainability of the supply chain.

Plans are for Lanxess to use TotalEnergies’s biomaterial which is based on tall oil derived from a tree resin and is a by-product of pulp production to manufacturer sustainable ion exchange resins.

According to the companies, confirming origin of the material uses a ‘mass balance’ approach whereby certified and non-certified materials are mixed physically, but kept separately on a book keeping basis, improving their tracibility.

“Our customers are increasingly asking for sustainable solutions, and raw materials with a low carbon footprint are a key lever here,” said Marcel Beermann, head of global procurement at Lanxess.
