Solvay and GKN Aerospace extend collaboration

Solvay and GKN Aerospace have extended their 2017 collaboration agreement to research the use of thermoplastic composites in aerospace components.

As part of the agreement, Solvay will remain a GKN Aerospace preferred supplier for its thermoplastic composite materials.

Recently, the companies developed a wing rib using the material and a “one shot manufacturing process” which they say had reduced weight and cost.

“Going forward our teams will specifically work on next generation [thermoplastic composite] materials and processes for aerospace applications including commercial aviation and advanced air mobility,” said Fabrizio Ponte, head of Solvay thermoplastics. “Our particular focus on high rate manufacturing solutions for medium and large structures.”
