Scott Bader acquires ATC Formulated Polymers

According to Scott Bader, a UK-headquartered manufacturer of unsaturated polyester resins and gel-coats, structural adhesives and bonding pastes, this acquisition will make it a global leader in the structural adhesives and bonding pastes business, with a full range of technologies and the manufacturing capabilities to meet the needs of composites customers.

“I see this acquisition as underlying our long term commitment to the North American market by providing customers with local production," says Philip Bruce, Managing Director of the Scott Bader Group.

Globalising technology

This acquisition is part of Scott Bader's new strategy to take it through to 2020. This has involved the creation of an Adhesives and Advanced Composites business unit.

“The key change for us going forward is a much stronger focus on globalising some key product technologies that we believe we’ve got, and the organisational change to deliver that,” explains Malcolm Forsyth, Global Director of this new business.

Adhesives is one of these.

“We see adhesives as a major strategic focus for us, with strong growth potential across the world, partly because markets are turning to structural adhesives as a technical way of improving productivity, improving product quality, and reducing cost. “

"I see this as a first step to being able to offer more speciality products into this critical market. The ATC speciality tooling and moulding products complement the Scott Bader range, and we will work to bring winning products to the global market through Scott Bader’s sales resources."

ATC, based in Burlington, Ontario, sells its compounds to the boat building and composites industries under the Poly-Bond®, Core-Bond®, Poly-Fair® and Poly-Fill® trade names.

“I was attracted to Scott Bader because of their wide range of adhesives, their vision to grow this market on a world-wide basis, and their employee-owned company structure," explains Tom Johannsen, ATC’s majority owner.

"With access to Scott Bader’s products and technology, we will be able to extend our current range of bonding pastes and adhesives, now including Scott Bader’s urethane acrylate Crestomer and MMA adhesives, to suit individual customer needs.”

The Scott Bader Inc USA office located in Stow, Ohio will continue to sell Scott Bader’s Crystic® resins and speciality chemicals.
