This CFM video discusses the LEAP engine's composite fan blades and containment case.

Developed by CFM International, a joint venture between Snecma (Safran) and GE Aviation, the LEAP-1 engine use of advanced composite materials is expected to reduce the weight by an estimated 500 lbs per aircraft.

The engine will reduce fuel consumption by 15%, nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by 50% and noise by 15 dB.

LEAP-1 engines are an option for Airbus's A320neo aircraft and have been selected for the C919, COMAC's new single-aisle commercial jet.

Cytec is planning to expand production capacities in Europe and the USA to support the LEAP engine programme.

The LEAP-1 engine will utilise Cytec's CYCOM® PR520 RTM resin system in its fan blades and containment cases. This resin is designed to offer superior damage tolerance and good strain capability required for primary structure aerospace applications.  Its performance characteristics are said to widen the resin infusion processing window and help assure full fibre wetting.

  • Aircraft engines have traditionally been the domain of metal but aero engine manufacturers are now saving substantial weight by using composites in the fan blades and containment case. For more information see Aero engines lose weight thanks to composites.
