New AOC resin makes smoother, lower cost tooling

The resin is designed to make tools for open moulding, resin transfer moulding (RTM) and resin infusion processes.

“Because MoldTru LPT-68000 resin’s unique chemistry produces very low exotherm heat, up to five layers of tooling laminate can be built simultaneously without causing surface distortion,” explains AOC Business Manager Fletcher Lindberg.

“Making the same mould with conventional tooling resin takes five individual steps, each followed by an overnight cure,” he says. “With MoldTru LPT-68000 technology, all that extra labour is eliminated, and finished parts are going out the door much sooner.”

AOC reports that the resin combines very low shrinkage with excellent fibre and filler wetting to ensure that the mould surface is essentially a precise replica of the master model’s surface. For some applications, vacuum can be used to produce high glass content tooling with technical fabrics.

AOC, headquartered in Tennessee, USA, is a global supplier of resins, gel-coats, colorants, additives and synergistic material systems for composites and cast polymers.
