Mitsubishi Rayon to double production capacity of US carbon fibre plant

Mitsubishi Rayon Carbon Fiber and Composites (MFCFAC) plans to install new facilities capable of 2000 tons of annual carbon fibre production at its existing site in Sacramento, California.

The expansion, scheduled to be completed by mid-2016, will double the plant's annual production capacity of currently 2000 tons up to 4000 tons.

Mitsubishi Rayon says it will use MRCFAC as a production centre for high-performance regular tow carbon fibre. It will serve growing demand for carbon fibre in the North American market from applications such as wind turbine blades and CNG and hydrogen fuel tanks for vehicles.

Worldwide demand for carbon fibre is increasing for industrial applications at an annual rate of more than 20%, the company states.
