Carbon Mobile has received an innovation award for what it says the world’s first carbon fiber smartphone.

The company won the JEC Composites innovation award for the Carbon 1 MK II, which features its hybrid radio enabled composite material (HyRECM) technology which fuses carbon fibers together with a complementary composite material capable of radio frequency (RF) signal permeation. It also incorporates 3D printed conductive ink into the carbon fiber structure. This prevents the carbon fibers from electromagnetic shielding, blocking radio signals.

According to Carbon Mobile, the carbon fiber-based housing structure is made from less than 5% plastic and weighs 125 grams, a third lighter than conventional smartphones. At only 6.3mm, it is also 25% thinner as well.

‘High performance materials like carbon fiber will drive forward the more exciting and greener future of connected devices,’ said Firas Khalifeh, CEO of Carbon Mobile. ‘This Carbon 1 is just the start.’
