The Rhode Island Marine Trades Association (RIMTA) Foundation has reportedly received a US$105,000 grant to expand the state’s glass fiber boat recycling program.
The RIMTA Foundation says that it is developing a sustainable financial model for glass fiber boat recycling and will also look into ways to prevent pollution, habitat destruction, and navigation impediments due to abandoned, storm-wrecked and end-of-life boats. In 2016, the foundation pioneered a way to use glass fiber boat material the production of cement, and over the past two years, the recycling program run by RIMTA has recycled more than sixty tons of glass fiber materials using the new process, the foundation said.
