Geothermal has potential to grow tenfold by 2050

In its Technology Roadmap: Geothermal Heat and Power, the IEA says geothermal could account for 3.5% of annual global electricity production and 3.9% of energy for heat by 2050, compared to today’s 0.3% and 0.2%, respectively.

Geothermal company EGS Energy welcomes the IEA report, with Roy Baris, Technical Director, saying: “Having worked with the team putting this report together, I am pleased that a prominent role has been given to the potential for engineered geothermal systems (EGS) within the development of the geothermal sector.

“Particularly, it is good to see that our vision for the scaling up of EGS is featured prominently in the chapter Technology Development: Action and Milestones and is described in such a clear fashion.”
