Composites Horizons expands production facilities

Prior to the expansion, CHI's facilities were housed in twin buildings located next door to each other in Covina, California, USA. The recently added adjacent third building adds an additional 41 000 ft2 (an 82% increase). Renovations at the existing CHI buildings included a 2300 ft2 expansion of a polyimide clean room.

The expanded site includes additional capacity to support projected growth, along with machining, final assembly space, and areas for trim, coating, inspection and measuring.

The three buildings centralise CHI's entire operations, including fabrication, assembly and delivery activities, as well as management and engineering offices and accounting services.

The expansion also includes investments in new process equipment, including:

  • a six-axis Fidia K414 CNC mill with rotary table;
  • on-site ultrasonic NDI with contour following, pulse echo/thru transmission, A and C scan, and a 10 ft tank;
  • an ASC 10 ft by 20 ft autoclave that reaches 800°F and 250 psi;
  • a 10' x 25' high temperature oven;
  • a Romer infinite 2.0 portable CMM with 10-foot capability, and
  • a Flow waterjet trim centre.

"This expansion allows us to continue providing our customers with the best, most technologically advanced production solutions available," states Jeff Hynes, President of CHI. "Developing and maintaining long-term relationships with our customers is very important to us. This expansion ensures that we remain fully capable of doing just that."
