The new site in West Jordan, located 20 miles from Boeing's fabrication and assembly site in Salt Lake City, was purchased from Masco and is expected to create approximately 100 new jobs. Design and construction are expected to take two years.
Boeing expects to refurbish the 850,000 ft2 building to complement the company's current operations in Salt Lake County and to help improve the efficiency from component fabrication to assembly of the 787-9 horizontal stabilizer.
The 787-9 Dreamliner is a slightly bigger version of the 787-8, with seating for 250-290 passengers. Its first flight is scheduled for 2013 and first delivery for 2014. The 787-8, which was delivered to its first customer in 2011, has seating for 210-250 passengers.
Composite materials make up 50% of the primary structure of the 787, including the fuselage and wing.
