A chair made from hemp fibers and bio-resin has been awarded first place in the Renewable Material of the Year 2021 awards.
The awards ceremony took place as part of the online Renewable Materials Conference, organized by German research consultancy nova-Institute.
The chair was developed by Dutch furniture manufacturer Vepa is reportedly the first country in the world to launch a range of chairs with this kind of biomaterial shell. The hemp fiber and bioresin are both fully biological, plant-based and recyclable, with the resin part of a new range of bio-based materials developed by Plantics which has been patented worldwide for many different applications. According to the companies, the production process absorbs more CO2 than it emits, and the chairs are designed in such a way that the various parts are easy to separate and materials can be reused.
