3M Scotch-Weld Epoxy-Acrylic Hybrid Structural Adhesive 7271 B/A has been designed to instantly secure bigHead and other mechanical fasteners. It is said to be suitable for a wide variety of substrates including glass reinforced plastics (GRP), epoxy-based resins, aluminium and stainless steel.

The adhesive can be applied with a manual or pneumatic hand-held applicator. 3M claims it can save days compared with hand lay-up techniques in securing a fastener such as a bigHead (supplied by bigHead Bonding Fasteners Ltd).

“7271 B/A can instantly hold mechanical fixings unlike commonly used two-part acrylic adhesives which can take anything up to three hours to hold fixtures," says Imran Idrees of 3M’s Industrial Adhesives & Tapes Division.

“Moreover, when compared with pungent, basic entry-level acrylic adhesives this ‘instant grab’ adhesive is odourless. This eliminates the need for a respirator to protect against odour during use, and can be applied vertically or even upside down without the adhesive dripping.”

3M reports that the biggest cost and time savings are for applications where numerous fixtures such as bigHead fasteners need to be bonded.
