A number of hopeful start ups have followed the trend to secure funding for their project by asking for money on sites such as kickstarter.com and indiegogo.com. If they succeed, it could lead to the development of an innovative new technology. While some have fallen by the wayside, others have had much more luck.
One major success story is the STACKER 3D printer, a commercial-grade 3D printer designed for composite filaments, offering high print speed and large build volume. Initially requiring US$100,000 to meet its goal, it only took 5 hours for the company to meet this amount. Its creators have received, to date, an enormous US$413,063 from 188 backers to allow them to bring the technology to life.
