Building and constructions in the plastics market

In the past few years, composite materials have gained huge traction in the building & construction industry owing to the numerous benefits which they provide. Composite materials are engineered from using two or more materials which have dissimilar chemical and physical properties. This enables manufacturers to build high-performance building materials which exhibit a combination of properties from different materials. Composites are available in different forms and types such as reinforced plastics, cement, steel–reinforced concrete, plastic–reinforced cement & concrete, composite wooden beams, and polymer wooden sheets. These materials are generally durable and strong. According to Coherent Market Insights’ (CMI) analysis, the global building and construction plastics market was valued at around US$ 60 Billion market in 2019 and is expected to double by 2027 in terms of revenue.

Although, plastics have found usage in our day to day lives, and eased it, the recycling of plastics is a matter of concern, which has caused ‘plastiphobia’. It specifically revolves around the recycling of plastics and their inappropriate usage, explains Raj Shah, Strategy Consultant at Coherent Market Insights (CMI). He further explains, there is enormous awareness around recycling, however, the technology and establishment of ecosystem around recycling plants still does not exist. The problem arises from the collection of plastic waste, both separation and distribution to chemical recycling plants, in order to achieve goals of a circular economy – separation – distribution to chemical recycling plants to achieve goals of a circular economy. Plastic roads are game changers! So, are several development of a recycled plastic products for use as a low-waste alternative for the construction industry, says Raj Shah. Most importantly, they will reduce the greenhouse gas emissions.

Reinforced plastics are the type of plastics which are reinforced with fibrous materials such as timber, fiberglass, and others. These are further bifurcated into categories on the basis of their plastic matrix i.e. which plastic product are used for reinforcement. One of the commonly used type of reinforced plastics in the construction industry is fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composite. This type of composite material has a higher strength to density ratio and superior resistance to corrosion. The fiber reinforcement has a primary utility to provide stiffness and strength directional which helps in enhancing the load-carrying capacity. These features have led to the rise in adoption of FRP as construction material. These are widely used for building underwater pipes, stairways, bars & sheets, onshore platforms etc.
