While an increasing number of car makers are looking at using composites in their future models, Jaguar is sticking with aluminium.
At the Paris Auto Show this month, Jaguar created a stir with its extended-range four-wheel drive electric concept car. The C-X75 has been designed to celebrate 75 years of the Jaguar marque and is said to illustrate the company's commitment to producing beautiful, fast cars powered by sustainable means.
The C-X75 sports an extruded and bonded ‘aerospace-inspired’ aluminium chassis clad with aluminium panels. Jaguar says aluminium not only saves weight, but it is one of the most easily recyclable metals available, and as with the current Jaguar XJ model, up to 50% of the C-X75’s structure is made from recycled aluminium.
The Jaguar C-X75 in brief:
- top speed 330 km/h (205 mph) and acceleration of 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 3.4 seconds;
- 4 (145 kW/195 bhp) electric motors – one for each wheel – produce 780 bhp;
- capable of running in purely electric (zero tailpipe emissions) mode for 110 km (68 miles);
- a combination of electric motors and micro gas turbines extend the range to 900 km (560 miles).
