‘Greener’ composite materials for boat building

20 November 2009

Matrix Composite Materials Co Ltd (MCMC) in the UK is offering two alternatives to the current fossil fuel based products used in modern composite boat construction.

MCMC, a distributor based in Bristol, UK, is offering two new 'green' products.

  • The CoreCork range of core materials from Amorim Cork Composites is based on cork – a sustainable and recyclable product. The products are modified for use with all the major resin systems available, including prepregs up to 150°C. A range of thicknesses and densities is available.
  • Sicomin Epoxy Systems’ GREENPOXY 55 is an epoxy system formulated with a high percentage of biomass carbon content. It is an epoxy system with a single hardener, where 55% of the molecular structure is of plant (biomass) origin. It thus contains 55% of 'green' carbon. Modification of the reaction, ie. speed of hardeners, will be possible but might reduce the percentage of ‘green’ components within the product.
