Bayer MaterialScience wins DOE grant to support turbine blade research

Bayer MaterialScience LLC will receive a US$750 000 grant from the US Department of Energy (DOE) to support the development of composite technologies to produce blades for more efficient wind turbines of 1.5 MW and above.

The project, Carbon Nanotube Reinforced Polyurethane Composites for Wind Turbine Blades, is an initiative to help accelerate development of advanced wind turbines, with a focus on overcoming technology barriers to broader application.

Bayer MaterialScience will focus on material innovations, including carbon nanotube technology, that can help optimise turbine performance.

“We are excited by this opportunity to apply progressive lightweight composite technologies for use in the wind energy industry,” says Mike Gallagher, Director, Government Services Group, Bayer MaterialScience LLC. “The programme puts our advanced materials to the test to advance wind energy as a commercially viable renewable energy solution.”
